Maria Montessori – A Pioneer in Education

Maria Montessori was an Italian physician, innovator and educator. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, when it was unusual for women to be involved in the field of science, Dr. Maria Montessori broke the mold, becoming one of the few female physicians with a strong engineering background as well!

Her method of education was first established in San Lorenzo, a poor inner-city district of Rome, where she started her first full day program for primary age children called “Casa dei Bambini” meaning the Children’s House.

To the surprise of many, the children in her programs thrived consistently demonstrating qualities of concentration, focus and intrinsic discipline and motivation. Thus began the journey of the “Montessori Method” all around the world, reaching the USA in 1911, with the first Montessori school being opened in Tarrytown NY.
